Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia(BBBSGC), in partnership with United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium and Richland School District One have launched a literacy-focused mentoring program, Readers on the Rise.
Recent studies have shown that reading proficiency by third grade is an important predictor of high school graduation. BBBSGC developed Readers on the Rise to do our part to ensure that children in our community are reading on grade level by the end of the third grade. The program, designed for second and third graders, integrates literacy into BBBSG’s one-to-one mentoring program.
Participating students (Littles) will be matched with a mentor, or Big, in either the site-based or community-based program. Matches in the site-based program will come together on school grounds once a week, for one hour during the school day. Matches in the community-based program will meet outside of school hours and will be expected to see each other face-to-face at least twice a month and spend a minimum of 4-6 hours together each month. Bigs and Littles will build a relationship with a strong emphasis on reading. While matches will have the flexibility and freedom to choose their activities, they will be asked to spend time setting academic goals, attending literacy-focused events, and implementing best practices that will instill an interest in and love for reading.
